INTRODUCTION / INTRODUCTION :

Dans la vallée du Rhin, dont les lignes des deux rives se partagent le trafic,
on a toujours l'impression que l'herbe est plus verte dans le pré d'à côté,
autrement dit qu'il passe davantage de trains sur la rive d'en face... En fait,
le fret est nettement majoritaire sur la rive droite, pour la simple raison
que les trains IC (et quelques ICE) passent par la rive gauche, ce qui réduit
fortement l'espace disponible pour le fret. Pour celui-ci, le trafic maximal
(près de 300 trains par jour en semaine) se situe au nord de Coblence,
puisqu'il inclut alors les flux de/vers la Sarre via la vallée de la Moselle.

In the Rhine valley, rail traffic is shared between 2 lines, one on each bank,
and one always feels that the grass is greener on the other side i.e. that
there are more trains there... In fact, there are much more freight trains on
the right bank, simply because IC trains (and a few ICEs too) use the left bank,
with less capacity available for freight there. The most heavily loaded section
(close to 300 train per day on an average midweek day) is the right bank north of
Koblenz, becauses it then includes traffic to/from Saarland via the Mosel valley.
