Après la ligne du Höllental (reportage n° 26), voici une autre incursion
dans une vallée de la Forêt-Noire, tout près de Karlsruhe cette fois.
Cette ligne, dite Murgtalbahn, est intégrée au réseau urbain des tramways
de Karlsruhe et est parcourue :
- toutes les deux heures par un tram-train express (mission S81, ici
Rastatt 12h29 > Freudenstadt-Hbf 13h37, origine Karlsruhe-Hbf 12h10
donc pas strictement tram-train),
- chaque heure par un omnibus (mission S8, Rastatt 12h38 > Freudenstadt-Hbf
14h07, origine Karlsruhe-Tullastr. donc vrai tram-train), mettant 21 mn
de plus pour... 24 arrêts supplémentaires (33 au lieu de 9),
- chaque heure également (minute 08 à Rastatt), une mission omnibus partielle
terminant à Forbach (Schwarzwald), limite de la zone tarifaire de Karlsruhe.
La desserte est donc à 2,5 trains par heure, toute la journée... et avec
ce service densifié, mis en place fin 2003, la fréquentation est passée de
2700 voyageurs/jour en 2003 à 13000 en 2009.

After the Höllental line (report nr. 26), here is another Black Forest valley,
not far from Karlsruhe this time. This "Murgtalbahn" line is part of the
Karlsruhe suburban network, and provides the following services :
- every two hours, an express tram-train (S81 mission e.g. Rastatt 12.29 >
Freudenstadt-Hbf 13.37, leaving Karlsruhe-Hbf at 12.10, so not stricly a tram-train),
- every hour, a slow service (S8 mission S8 e.g. Rastatt 12.38 > Freudenstadt-Hbf
14.07, origine Karlsruhe-Tullastr. so a proper tram-train), 21-min slower
than the S81... with 24 more stops (33 vs. 9),
- also every hour (leaving Rastatt at 08 mins past the hour), another slow service
terminating at Forbach (Schwarzwald), the end of the Karlsruhe fares zone.
So, 2.5 trains run every hour in both directions, throughout the day.
This densified service, running since 2003, has resulted in a patronage increase
from 2,700 per day in 2003 to 13,000 in 2009.

01a Le profil simplifié de la ligne Basic line profile

Ce profil a été construit à partir des observations terrain du jour,
et n'est donc pas complet, notamment au niveau des évitements.
Les altitudes proviennent en majorité de l'atlas ferroviaire Schweers+Wall.
Les vitesses limites ont été relevées de manière trop partielle
pour y figurer, mais seront volontiers incluses si quelqu'un fournit
l'information... ou le seront après une seconde (probable) visite.

On y voit très bien la "bosse" de Freudenstadt (50 °/°° dans le sens
montant, puis 45 °/°° à la descente vers Freudenstadt-Hbf), qui était
équipée d'une crémaillère jusqu'en 1926.

On notera la diversité des matériels roulants à Freudenstadt-Hbf,
étoile de 3 voies uniques dont une seule est exploitée par DB Regio :
- tramway AVG de/vers Karlsruhe,
- automotrice DB série 425 de/vers Stuttgart,
- automoteur diesel SWEG série 650 vers Offenburg et au-delà vers Bad Griesbach.

Les 6 dernières photographies ont été prises à Bad Griesbach, à la fin d'un parcours
Freudenstadt-Hbf - Offenburg - Appenweier - Bad Griesbach dont les deux extrémités
sont, à vol d'oiseau, à moins de 10 km l'une de l'autre.

This line profile was built using the day's observations : it is therefore
not complete, notably as regards passing loops. Altitudes were mostly found
in the Schweers+Wall atlas. Speed limits are too incomplete to be shown,
but will be added in the future, either if someone provides the information
or after another (likely) trip on the line.

The Freudenstadt "hump" (1 in 20 southwards, 1 in 22 northwards) is
clearly visible ; it was a rack railway until 1926.

One may note the variety of rolling stock at Freudenstadt-Hbf,
where 3 single tracks join (only one with DB Regio services) :
- AVG tramway to/from Karlsruhe,
- DB EMU, Class 425, to/from Stuttgart,
- SWEG DMU, Class 650, to Offenburg and beyond (Bad Griesbach).

The 6 last pictures were taken at Bad Griesbach, at the end of a 108-km-long trip
(Freudenstadt-Hbf - Offenburg - Appenweier - Bad Griesbach)... the extremities
of which are less than 10 km apart as the crow flies.

Toutes les photographies sont prises depuis l'arrière de la rame, donc à contre-sens
de la circulation. Sur l'infrastructure, on notera son bon état général (l'électrification
est récente, avec de la caténaire rigide dans les tunnels) et la présence de traverses
métalliques en Y, bien adaptée aux courbes de faible rayon (jusqu'à 200 m ici).

All pictures were taken looking backwards, from the rear of the tram-train set.
Worth noting is the generally good condition of the infrastructure (the electrification
is recent, with rigid catenary in tunnels), as well as the use or Y-shaped metal sleepers,
well suited to small curve radiuses (which may be as low as 200 m here).
